Each year professional staff who work in law schools get together to network, share common experiences and learn from each other. This year Vicki Vivers and Carmel Velleley put their hand up to host the conference.
The key theme of the conference was ‘Anywhere with Law: Incorporating Rural and Regional Skills.’
The agenda for the conference was enough to make anyone green with envy. It incorporated an array of culinary delights, fun experiences and a very interesting selection of speakers.
In terms of the presentations, Associate Professor Amanda Kennedy’s talk was a highlight according to many participants. Amanda reminded people there are more options for law graduates than working in large firms in the big city. The participants also enjoyed Dr Lou Conway’s talk on the Smart Regional Incubator and Aileen Kennedy’s presentation on Wellbeing. Dr Kip Werren and Paul Akon even gave an impromptu presentation on legal practice in rural areas.
As the conference was highlighting and showcasing all things rural and regional, the participants were lucky enough to visit the UNE SMART Farms. One participant ‘wished her husband was there to see how innovative the farm was.’ The participants were also fascinated to see how technology has been integrated in the farm, it was clear to all the agricultural research at UNE is truly unique. One participant noted ‘Dr Rachelle Hergenhan was very knowledgeable.’
Johl Sue, the School of Law’s Educational Support Officer, also delivered an interesting presentation relating to learning support. The delegates were impressed with the level of educational support that is offered to academics at UNE, which identified the need for such expertise at their institutions. For those of you who don’t know, Johl is the genius behind the School of Law’s Moodle sites and webpages, and also assists with the School of Law social media platforms.
Participants enjoyed the UNE and New England country hospitality showcasing the unique regional architectural and produce including Peterson’s Winery, Booloominibah and other local landmarks. One participant noted of Peterson’s Winery that it offered a ‘perfect setting, a beautiful meal and nice wines.’ All agreed though that the real culinary highlight was ‘Anna’s homemade delights.’
The Conference highlighted the collegial relationship between counterparts from various Law Schools across Australia and they look forward to catching up each year.
Congratulations again Carmel and Vicki!
