Don’t Look Up starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence is one of Netflix’s biggest hits. A thinly veiled climate change parable, it warns of the consequences for human society of failing to respond to the signals of nature. Away from the movies, the concept of ‘nature risk’ – the nature-based risks firms face to their reputation and their productive asset base – is getting mainstream attention. ‘Nature-related financial disclosure’, by law or market pressure, may become a cornerstone requirement in the next few years for any firm that relies on natural resources. LAW358/LLM558 – Natural Resources Law – equips students entering legal and other professions dealing with natural resources and sustainability issues with an understanding of the relevant laws and principles at the State, national and international levels. UNE’s Law School has an international reputation in this area through the work of the Australian Centre for Agriculture & Law (AgLaw Centre) and the Law School journal, the International Journal of Regional, Rural, Remote Law & Policy. Topics include: fisheries, water resources, agriculture, biodiversity, forestry, mining, energy, as well as the interaction of natural resources law with First Nations’ rights and interests.
