During the early years of Morgan’s schooling, she took some time to become proficient at reading- so she drew instead! As she matured, she generated a particular passion for drawing people and their faces. Morgan’s love of art grew exponentially whilst attending Nambucca High School. For her major art work in Year 12 she painted a powerful picture of two female figures holding up the world.

Interestingly, her love of law started growing at the same time. In fact, Krystal McKinnon who was her legal studies teacher in year 12, was instrumental in motivating Morgan to study law at university. Morgan quickly realised she wanted to stand up for others and help people who are in vulnerable situations.

Morgan is currently a 4th year Criminology/Law student who has recently completed a WORK300 course as part of her Criminology degree. Within this unit, she chose to use her artistic skills to raise awareness of sexual assault and harassment issues. I am confident you will all agree her images are breath taking!

Her art materials of choice are charcoal, pencils and oil paints. She notes ‘one of my main influences is Ben Quilty who is well known for his portraits of soldiers in Afghanistan. In his works, one’s skin colour is chosen by the emotion being portrayed rather than the subject’s actual skin colour.’

Morgan is the current president of the UNE Law Students’ Society. She chose to join the LSS in order to find her university ‘tribe.’ The aspect Morgan enjoys most about the LSS is attending events such as ALSA (Australian Law Students’ Association) and having the opportunity to meet people such as the Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG. The experience has also benefitted her greatly as it has built up her confidence in terms of public speaking.

Morgan has been instrumental in redirecting the focus of the LSS. The group now focuses on promoting careers options for students, whilst building up their skill base. They also act as an advocacy body for students.

As may be clear from her emotive artworks, when she graduates, Morgan wants to help sexual assault victims.

Thank you Morgan for raising awareness of such an important issue!
