Today the UNE School of Law was in the throes of Kirby mania. Yes the rock star of law himself, Mr Michael Kirby AC CMG was in the building.
During his visit, Mr Kirby spoke to law students, high school students, and members of the LGTBI+ community, university staff and the general community. Mr Kirby has been visiting Armidale since 1978. He noted this was his 5th Kirby lecture. He displayed wit and modesty when he stated that he is ‘being recycled’ and that he is hoping to live long enough to participate in at least 10 Kitto lectures. We have no doubt Mr Kirby will achieve this objective!
Mr Kirby’s address related to the contentious issue of dual nationality and section 44 of the Australian Constitution. He spoke about some possible solutions to this issue which are well worth listening to.
The UNE School of Law would like to thank Associate Professor Amanda Kennedy and Belinda Eastgate for organising the visit. We also owe a massive debt of gratitude to Mr Kirby who gave up his time to inspire and motivate the young people of our region.
