Ali didn’t start her law degree at the UNE School of Law straight after school- instead she started studying Equine Science at Charles Sturt University. When she decided this degree was not for her she chose to transfer to UNE. UNE was her first and only choice as she wanted to move to a regional yet vibrant location. She knew it was affordable to live in Armidale and she could also relocate with her beloved horses. Ali lived at one of UNE’s colleges- Robb College- when she first enrolled in her law degree- but after 12 months she moved into town with a group of friends from the college.

Throughout her degree Ali has worked at New England Girl’s School (NEGS) in the Equestrian Centre. This job is perfect for Ali as she loves horses. She is also very personable and a great role model for all the students who attend the prestigious girl’s school.

Ali has taken full advantage of every opportunity afforded to her at UNE and has just joined the UNE School of Law’s mentoring program as a mentee. She found out about the new program at the Law Students’ Society Cocktail Party after Dr Karen Lee encouraged students to join up. Ali has not regretted this decision as she has met Naomi who is the perfect mentor for her.

When Ali first met her mentor she could not believe Naomi-who is an alumni of the UNE School of Law- was essentially Ali in 10 years’ time. Both Ali and Naomi have the same interests in law- which are family and criminal law. They attended the same high school in Morpeth near Newcastle and even rode at the same horse riding school.

Ali was a bit nervous about meeting Naomi for the first time but she needn’t have been. When Ali met her mentor in the university holidays Naomi turned up to the meeting armed with information about college of law options- such as the ANU College of Law. Naomi also talked to Ali about the different areas she could go into such as the Department of Family and Community Services as well as advocacy and policy work within the Government sector. They truly are a match made in heaven –or the UNE School of Law!

Whilst she is still in Armidale Ali will continue taking full advantage of all the lovely things the New England region has to offer. For example, she can often be found enjoying a delicious vegetarian meal at the ‘Naturally Healthy Wholefood’ café in Uralla. Ali also enjoys bushwalking at Point Lookout, Cathedral Rock, as well as Dorrigo and Bellingen National Parks.

Thank you Ali and good luck with all of your future endeavours!
