WORK300/WORK500

This is an academic unit that will be part of your course of study.

If you are unsure if this unit is suitable, please read through your course details that can be found at: http://www.une.edu.au/courses/

Also, read through the unit descriptions at: WORK300 and WORK500.

If you would like to undertake a WORK300/WORK500 unit, you will need to complete the following:

  1. Register for WorkReady on the WorkReady Registration Form return it to our office - this can be done via email.
  2. Once your registration has been received by Career Development, you will be given access to the online unit to complete. This unit will go through 5 modules:
    1.      Module 1: Occupational Health and Safety
    2.      Module 2: Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and Anti-Discrimination in the Workplace
    3.      Module 3: Employability Skills and Resume Preparation
    4.      Module 4: Professional Conduct and Workplace Ethics
    5.      Module 5: What to do if things go wrong?
  3. Career Development staff will email you with a notification that the unit can be accessed in your myUNE portal.
  4. Enrol online, just like any other unit. Part of this enrolment procedure will include completing a Head of School permission form. This will come up automatically with your online enrolment and once submitted will be automatically sent to the Career Development staff for approval. Career Development staff will check if you have completed 72cps for WORK300 or 12cps for WORK500 and have registered for the program, they will then notify the Student Centre that you are eligible to enrol. You need to check your enrolment to make sure that it has been confirmed by the commencement of the semester. If not, please contact the Student Centre via the AskUNE button on the UNE homepage.
  5. Complete the online unit, including the workbook, quizzes and the resume (as per module 3) and submit the workbook with your new resume to the Student Assist office. Career Development staff will track your progress through Blackboard. Emailed workbooks will not be accepted as they require signatures.
  6. Now is the time to start looking for an Academic supervisor - it is important to approach an academic early (usually the semester prior to when youare enrolling in the unit) to ensure that there is sufficient time to organise everything required for your placement. Best practice is to approach your school office and make a request as to which academics may be
    available for a WORK300/WORK500 supervision.
  7. Once you have sourced an academic to supervise you, print the Academic Assessment Portfolio that can be found in the online unit and make an appointment with them to discuss what you hope to gain from the placement. Your supervisor will then set a task for you and sign this off on the Academic Assessment Portfolio paperwork- this will provide the basis of your formal academic assessment. YOU MUST KEEP THIS PAPERWORK AND ENSURE THAT YOUR SUPERVISOR ALSO HAS A COPY.
  8. When looking for an employer, think about what you want to get out of the placement. The employer and the task that you undertake must be relevant to your UNE studies. Remember, this work placement is an excellent experience to put on your resume as ‘Professional Experience’ for your future employer.
  9. It is important when canvassing employers to let them know that the UNE will cover you for insurance – most employers do not have voluntary workers insurance and could possibly turn you down because of the risks involved of having you on site without insurance – the WorkReady program provides this insurance. If required, the Career Development staff can email the employer a copy of the Certificates of Currency to validate that we will cover you on site.
  10. Once you have completed the online unit and have submitted your workbook and resume to a satisfactory standard, Career Development will email you a Work Placement Agreement. This form is to be completed with your details, employer details, dates, duties and your academics signature.
  11. Your agreement is then submitted and processed by the Career Development staff. A letter will be sent to your employer with a copy of the agreement and an evaluation for them to complete once you have finished your placement. (Career Development staff will email you a copy of this evaluation once it is submitted to our office by the host employer)
  12. All paperwork will need to be submitted to the Career Development - Student Assist office at least 2 weeks prior to the commencement date of your placement – this is to allow for insurance to be arranged.
  13. WorkReady paperwork is only processed on Tuesdays of each week.
  14. Your academic assessment task will be due by the date assigned by your
supervising academic or the 15th June at the latest.   This does not
come through the Student Assist office. Marks will be awarded by your
academic supervisor and submitted to the examinations unit, as with any
    other unit.
