Professional Work Placement
Some Awards (eg: BURP; ECON339; Rural Science; etc) stipulate that you must complete a number of hours of on-the-job training before you can graduate. WorkReady can assist in providing insurance for these non-paid placements and will also provide documentation of the hours completed and where the placements have been undertaken.
If you would like to undertake a professional work placement, you will need to complete the following:
- Register for WorkReady on the WorkReady Registration Form and return it to our office - this can be done via email.
- Once your registration has been received by Career Development, you will be given access to the online unit to complete. This unit will go through 5 modules:
- Module 1: Occupational Health and Safety
- Module 2: Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and Anti-Discrimination in the Workplace
- Module 3: Employability Skills and Resume Preparation
- Module 4: Professional Conduct and Workplace Ethics
- Module 5: What to do if things go wrong?
- Career Development staff will email you with a notification that the unit can be accessed in your myUNE portal.
- Complete the online unit, including the workbook, quizzes and the resume (as per module 3) and submit the workbook with your new resume to the Student Assist office. Career Development staff will track your progress through Blackboard. Emailed workbooks will not be accepted as they require signatures.
- When looking for an employer, think about what you want to get out of the placement. The employer and the task that you undertake must be relevant to your UNE studies. Remember, this work placement is an excellent experience to put on your resume as ‘Professional Experience’ for your future employer.
- It is important when canvassing employers to let them know that the UNE will cover you for insurance – most employers do not have voluntary workers insurance and could possibly turn you down because of the risks involved of having you on site without insurance – the WorkReady program provides this insurance. If required, the Career Development staff can email the employer a copy of the Certificate of Currency to validate that we will cover you on site.
- Once you have completed the online unit and have submitted your workbook and resume to a satisfactory standard, Career Development will email you a Work Placement Agreement. This form is to be completed with your details, employer details, dates, duties, your signature and your course co-ordinators signature.
- Your agreement is then submitted and processed by the Career Development staff. A letter will be sent to your employer with a copy of the agreement and an evaluation for them to complete once you have finished your placement. (Career Development staff will email you a copy of this evaluation once it is submitted to our office by the host employer)
- All paperwork will need to be submitted to the Career Development - Student Assist office at least 2 weeks prior to the commencement date of your placement – this is to allow for insurance to be arranged.
- WorkReady paperwork is only processed on Tuesdays of each week.
