  1. As a student who started mid-year, I wanted a list of all the important numbers to call the university – direct numbers – so I didn’t have to wait for the switchboard to connect me.
I also wanted a large calendar so I could plan my semester; I didn’t like having to look online for everything (especially HECS census dates and other important academic dates like that) all the time.
Finally, as an external uni student, some coupons for national stores would have been nice to lighten the financial load – as an interstate student, my student card is not able to be used on public transport in Qld, as many angry bus drivers told me several times. The same could be said for other locations where student cards are usually accepted – I’ve been knocked back several times when I have tried to use it (the Birch Carol & Coyle cinema is a perfect example).
Hopefully there will be some way of helping the external students enjoy their study experience a little more. The academic staff are wonderful with external students in my experience. Let’s hope the administrative staff can be a little more helpful.

  2. Hi Orientation Team :)
tUNEup was great: a really good introduction to essay-writing and getting the study-brain going before the semester started.

Orientation to Blackboard and Sakai would be really helpful.

I’m guessing that it depends on the lecturer as to what functionality is included in the Unit’s OnLine communication system (please excuse my ignorance since I’ve only just begun in semester 2, 2009 and undertaken only two units so far: one of which was Blackboard-driven and the other Sakai-.

It would be good to be pre-pared (read “informed”) if functionality is idiosynchratic (e.g. forums, chat). I understand that announcements such as what to expect with regards to online interactive possibilities may be beyond the scope of orientation !

All the best and thanks for the opportunities to share. Appreciate that not everyone can know everything ~

  3. Im an external - I’d love it if at the start of the unit the lecturers could give us a “hit the ground running” type deal - where they just post stuff like sites you should save to your favourites. Also, only 1 of 3 of my units so far have used the calander function - this could be a great tool you could populate it with Lecture dates/times (and even get to the point where you can chose different scenarios that suite you better for attending lecturers) as well as you could use it to pace your learning eg by 17th April you should have finished reading chapter 4 - as often its difficult to know what pace to study.
Love the blog Ed - keep up the good work big fella.
