ITD will be performing maintenance on University systems and services next Saturday the 14th April 2012. The half-day maintenance will commence from 6am and will complete by midday, as a result, a number of systems and services will be unavailable during this period. We are aware that over 30 intensive schools will be in progress on this day and have scheduled work to keep disruptions to teaching at a minimum.
- As network switches are rebooted to install updates, there will be very brief localised network interruptions.
- There will be brief outages for some UNE systems throughout the morning (with limited impact on intensive school activity)
- Moodle /Learning Studio or the UNE website (including OLA and OLE) will NOT be affected and will remain available
This event is one of ITD’s scheduled maintenance windows, during which essential work is carried out to enhance and improve University systems. The schedule of maintenance windows for 2012 is on the ITD website (http://www.une.edu.au/it-services/policies/ ). Please check these dates before planning any events that may require I.T. services or support.
Service Desk support will be available between 10am and 6pm on the day – please contact the IT Service Desk by email (servicedesk@une.edu.au) or by phone (02 6773 5000 or 1800 763 040).

Travel and volunteer this summer in incredible places like Costa Rica, South Africa, Thailand and New Zealand! International Student Volunteers (ISV) is looking for students from The University of New England to travel overseas this summer on its exciting volunteer and adventure programs.
Selected participants will have the opportunity to travel with a group of students from all over the world (18 years and over) on a program which combines volunteer projects and adventure tours to either Costa Rica, New Zealand, Thailand or South Africa . The standard program lasts for 1 month but students can elect to travel from two weeks up to three months. Travelling alongside professionally trained project and tour leaders, students will spend the first two weeks volunteering in real hands-on projects, in either social community development (improving the quality of impoverished villages, building houses for refugees, teaching children English etc) or conservation (working with endangered sea turtles, elephants and dolphins, ecosystem rehabilitation, environmental education etc). The second two weeks will see participants launch into an adrenaline filled cultural and adventure tour of their chosen country, involving such activities as white water rafting, glacier climbing, waterfall rappelling, scuba diving and jungle kayaking.
ISV takes over 4000 students on its life changing programs every year. Its mission statement is “to combine education; conservation and recreation into the most incredible experience of a lifetime, while giving back to the local communities in the countries in which we are travelling. information on the program can be found at www.isvolunteers.org

The Returning Officer for Student Elections (Deputy Director Rhonda Leece) has today emailed all students seeking nominations for the upcoming student elections for both the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Student Guilds.
Why is this important? Well, along with representing you students (and yes, you off campus students in particular) on University Committees, some of the newly elected representatives will also have the opportunity to sit on the Student Amenities Fee Advisory Board and have a say on how the Amenities Fee should be spent. We know that’s been a hot topic for off-campus students in particular and it represents a unique opportunity to shape the future for both existing and new students who will join the UNE family from Trimester 2 onwards.
Nominations will close on Monday April 9, with the election starting April 16 and closing on April 23 (we’ll keep you up to date with everything that’s happening). Results of the elections are expected to be announced on April 30, 2012.
More information is available at:
So jump over and check your UNE email account and get involved in shaping the futre

With Census Date fast approaching (i.e. Saturday March 31) now is the time to assess where you’re at with your studies. If you are considering withdrawing from a unit, get in before the 31st to avoid incurring a HECS debt. There’s more info over at AskUNE (click here).
The Student Support Team’s advice to students is always study less Units and do well rather than too many and risking failing one and having to redo it (and pay twice). If you’re considering dropping out entirely or would like a bit of advice, get in contact with us before you do so we can explore a range of options with you first! You can call us on 02 6773 4430 or email us at studentsupport@une.edu.au
