“How to Get the Most Out of the Supervision Relationship” & “How to Stay Sane While Writing a Thesis” from the team at Student Assist. More details and seminar resources …

“How to Get the Most Out of the Supervision Relationship”.

This seminar will explore: What sort of a relationship is this? How and why did I get into this relationship? What are our roles? What sorts of changes can we expect in this relationship? What am I doing or not doing to make this relationship work? The seminar will explore how you see yourself as a student – do you recognize your needs? Do you and how can you let your supervisor know your needs? How do you see your supervisor and are you aware of his or her needs? When, where, and how often do you meet and what can you do so that you AND your supervisor get the most out of each meeting? The seminar will explore some of the traps students and supervisors fall into, and how to avoid them, and will also look at how you can ask for and handle feedback and what might feel like criticism.

“How to Stay Sane While Writing a Thesis”

This seminar will help you identify your study goals as well as the strengths and any weaknesses that you bring to your study. The seminar will also look at the procrastination trap, how to manage your time and to minimise stress. It will also explore the rollercoaster of peaks and troughs that can occur when embarking on postgraduate study, as well as how to overcome the dreaded “writer’s block” and feelings of isolation.

  1. Thank you for this.
As an external student it is not easy to get to speak to lecturers in person.
Great to see presentation stuff on net.
    Keep up thengood work!

  2. I’ve just completed a BA Hons externally and am now planning a PhD. Any chance of a blog for externals to share supervision experiences? Being an external is really isolating. My biggest issue was having no one to talk to because my supervisor was ‘busy’ - while I’ve no doubt this was true, I often felt I was on ’set and forget’.

  3. Thanks for your feedback - how about we look at establishing a forum for postgrads rather than a blog - we could probably host it here. Will do some research and see what we can come up with.

  4. Forum - that’s what I meant to say! That would be great. Isolation is such an issue as an external I seriously considered taking myself off to another Uni - but then again I love UNE :)

  5. Good news folks, I’ve asked the IT people to set up a forum for Postgrads as per treskell’s request - I’ll post the details as soon as it’s done.
