$558,000 boost for UNE’s Asia ConneXions program

The University of New England’s Asia ConneXions project has been awarded $558,000 by the Australian Government through the National Broadband Network – Enabled Education and Skills Services (NBN-EESS) program. The Asia ConneXions project was one of 12 projects picked for the NBN-EESS program nationwide, and the only one from UNE and Armidale.

Secondary students enjoy the challenge of UNE Maths Day

Australian-Korean ConneXion meets Julia Gillard

Two UNE programs named as finalists at Innovation Awards

fionajulieTwo education programs based at the University of New England were finalists in this year’s Northern Inland Innovation Awards.

The annual awards were presented at the end of October during a special event in Gunnedah organised by Regional Development Australia Northern Inland.

The two UNE finalists were in the “Research and Education” category. They were the University’s School of Rural Medicine, for its annual “whole body dissection surgical anatomy” course, and the team behind the QuickSmart numeracy and literacy intervention program for school students.

Boost to live video links with Korean schoolrooms

mauhAn innovative project that is enabling school students in Australia and South Korea to visit each other’s classrooms via the Internet was strengthened by the signing of new international agreements at the University of New England last week.

The day (Thursday 8 September) began with a videoconferencing link between students at Armidale’s Ben Venue Public School and their counterparts at Cheongsol Primary School in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. Representatives of the NSW Department of Education and Communities, UNE, and two leading IT companies visited Ben Venue School to observe the Australian end of the live link.

Secondary students ’stretched and encouraged’ at Maths Day

peggmdayMathematics students from secondary schools throughout northern NSW and from as far south-west as Dubbo got together at the University of New England on Friday to share their enthusiasm for maths in a day of stimulating competition.

More than 200 students from 32 schools, accompanied by teachers and parents, travelled to UNE to take part in the University’s annual Year 8 Mathematics Day, which is now in its 17th year. Working in 55 teams of four, the students enjoyed an experience of cooperative problem solving and applying mathematics to real-life scenarios.

Educators report ’sensational’ success of ‘QuickSmart’

grahamshepherdEducators from across Australia met at the University of New England late last month to share their experiences in the use of QuickSmart, an intervention program that helps school students improve their basic skills in mathematics.

QuickSmart is sensational,” said Rob Presswell, Principal of Driver Primary School in Palmerston, Northern Territory. “It’s achieved outstanding outcomes.”

The QuickSmart program, developed by Professor John Pegg and Associate Professor Lorraine Graham at the UNE-based National Centre of Science, ICT and Mathematics Education for Rural and Regional Australia (SiMERR National Centre), has been running at Driver Primary School for the past six years.
