Information Technology Directorate - scheduled maintenance window - Saturday 18th October 2008

Friday, October 10th, 2008

Dear Students and Colleagues,

The next planned maintenance event for IT infrastructure and services occurs on Saturday 18th October 2008.   This is a quarterly shutdown and will involve all systems, networks, and services.

This event is one of a regular maintenance schedule, publicised earlier in the year, during which essential upgrades and maintenance improvements will be applied to University systems.

The schedule includes a major full day outage every quarter and a shorter outage every month. These are scheduled to take place on the third Saturday every month and quarterly in January, April, July and October.  Given sufficient advance notice, times may be varied to cater for important events such as residential schools.  Notices and updates regarding the activities to occur during the maintenance windows are posted on the ITD Services Announcements web page before each scheduled window.

Please check the ITD service announcements web page regularly for information relating to ITD services and events.

To reiterate, during this scheduled maintenance window ALL web based and network services, including the UNE web site, UNEOnline units, access to external web sites from on-campus computers, and email will be unavailable.

Time – 6:00am to 5:00 pm

Date – Saturday 18th October 2008

Should you require any further information or wish to provide feedback in anyway please contact the service desk team on 02 6773 5000 or via servicedesk@une.edu.au.

We thank you for your co-operation.

Brief Phone outage - Wednesday, 8th October (7pm - 8pm)

The PABX phone system will be patched today (Wednesday, 8th October) to fix our daylight savings time.  This will result in the phone system being temporarily unavailable between 7 and 8 pm tonight

Brief IT System Outage - Friday, 3rd October, 7am (estimated 10 minutes)

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Due to recent changes in the Daylight Savings Time start dates for Australia, system restarts are required for several major environments to make sure they display time accurately. As these affect important systems such as assignment submission, they cannot be delayed till our next scheduled outage.

ITD would like to advise that from tomorrow morning the following systems will be briefly restarted:

Blackboard and Sakai, the online teaching system

Uportal, the student entry page

Confluence, the staff wiki site

Archibus, the FMS planning site

Minor systems such as:

Eportfolio, eReserve, Student ID Card application, FMS Key manager, MFD credit system and the payments gateway, and the Courses and Units catalogue.

These systems will be restarted one after the other, so while the whole process may take an hour, each major system is expected to be down for no more then 10 minutes and minor ones less.

The outage will start at 7am, Friday the 3rd of October 2008. Systems will be offline for no more than 10 minutes and the whole process will take approximately an hour.
