    Bishop Edward Muhima visits UNE

    Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

muhimaMembers of the UNE community will have the opportunity to hear a series of inspirational and insightful talks this week, during a visit to Armidale by Bishop Edward Muhima of Uganda.

The bishop will give public lectures on Uganda’s past and future on Wednesday and Thursday, along with a series of seminars throughout the week on topics ranging from “the psychology of change” to land use and the rescue and upbringing of orphaned children in Uganda.

The seminars will be hosted by a variety of schools within the university, in addition to a number of church-based events to be held at St Mark’s Chapel on campus and further events in town.

Bishop Muhima is a leading community and church figure in Uganda and East Africa.

After completing his studies at Bishop Tucker Theological College in the 1970s, he was forced to flee Uganda due to his protests against the brutal Idi Amin regime. He completed a double masters degree in Divinity and Arts at Trinity Seminary in the United States and simultaneously a Certificate in Christian Education. He continued his studies at North Western University, Illinois, until 1980, when he became a Doctor of Philosophy and simultaneously obtained a Graduate Certificate in African Studies. His doctoral dissertation “The Fellowship of Suffering” (A Theological Interpretation of Christian Suffering) drew upon his experiences during the Idi Amin regime.

He is involved in many aid projects and is a highly regarded speaker on a wide range of topics.

The Anglican Diocese of Armidale New England has enjoyed a reciprocal and mutually beneficial partnership with the Diocese of North Kigezi in remote western Uganda for several years. It is at the diocese’s invitation that Bishop Muhima is visiting Armidale.
