UNE delegation strengthens links with Vietnam

A UNE delegation, led by Professor Victor Minichiello, Pro Vice Chancellor and Dean of UNE’s Faculty of The Professions, visited Vietnam last month to further develop partnerships with major tertiary institutions in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in the fields of education, business and management.
The delegation included Mr Lindsay Yates (Director, International Marketing and Pathways), Ms Judy McDonald (Faculty Project Manager, Faculty of The Professions), and Dr Maxine Darnell and Professor Grant Harman from the School of Business, Economics and Public Policy.
In addition to negotiating institutional partnerships and advanced standing arrangements, the visit included seminar presentations to more than 25 people interested in undertaking their PhD studies with UNE in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
“Considerable interest was shown in the new four-year PhD degree program that enables students to undertake their research in Vietnam and be supported by academic supervisors from both UNE and Vietnam,” Professor Minichiello said. “This is an important initiative, as it allows research capacity development to occur on two levels: collecting local data that will inform policy and practice development within Vietnam, and increasing the educational capacity of academic staff and senior officials in Vietnam.”
He said that a number of important opportunities in cooperative teaching and/or advanced standing collaboration had been discussed in detail with major tertiary institutions in Hanoi. “The Deputy Rector of the National Institute of Educational Management, Dr Le Phuoc Minh (pictured here), emphasised the importance that the Ministry of Education and Training was placing on international cooperation. Vice President Le Khac Doa from the Hanoi University of Business and Technology was keen to facilitate immediate cooperation between his institution and UNE with the development of an advanced standing agreement. Other prospective partners included the National Economics University (teaching collaboration at Master’s degree level) and the Bac Ha International University (advanced standing and potential collaboration in Health).
“In addition, discussions with the Vietnam National University (VNU), Hanoi were held to recruit new students into the highly regarded and successful Master of Educational Administration degree program that UNE has been teaching in partnership with VNU since 2002. To date there have been some 160 graduates from this program, many of whom now hold senior positions in government ministries and educational institutions.”
