Nat Res Society & UNE Landcare Meeting 01/05/08

Open: 5.10pm

Present: Leo Butler, Irena Duong, Dean Egan, Sally Hatton, Polly Kennelly,
Cal
Leech, George Plunkett, Holly Rutledge, Chandeswer Shrestha, Kath Taylor & Nathalie van der Veer.

Graduates luncheon held during the holidays was lots of fun; a good day was had by all. There were 40 people to cater for, which was a bit less than expected. Made a small profit of $70.

Everybody please sell chocolates!!!

Ausimm (Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy) -
Cal sent a letter of interest to set up connections at UNE. It will be a good place to get contacts for future work experience and jobs.

Kath - Tree planting at

Armidale
City Public to take place on Thursday 8th May at
1pm - 3pm. Anyone interested in helping out come along and give us a hand. We will meet as a group at
Faulkner St entrance. We have 134 native grasses to plant with help from a school child. We will be borrowing tools from SNELC.

This year we will be starting a 2nd semester committee change over. The important positions being President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Marketing / Promoting / Events, as well as having supportive members to keep the society running. If no one is interested the society will go into dormancy and only a Ball Committee needs to be formed for the 2008 ball. Nat is going to speak to Julian and Rex about making the society dormant. But from this meeting it looks as though this is what is going to happen as no one is too keen to take over theses roles. It has been put down to low
Uni numbers in these types of degrees. Everyone at the meeting agreed to help out to form a Ball Committee. It was suggested that the ball be held at the Wicklow this year (24th Oct or 31st Oct), phone calls and inquiries are being made to the Wicklow presently.

BBQ - Friday 9th May to eat left over sausages and drink some drinks that are in the cool room. Bring your mates!
Kath is organising the bread for the BBQ.

Leo suggested doing a Landcare day on the creek. Everyone seemed pretty keen.
Close - 5.50pm

Nat res society meeting Meeting No.1

Thursday, 28.2.08

In attendance

Jeff Styles, Calvin Leech, Leo Butler, Natalie Vander Veer, Holly Rutledge, Irena Dinory, Robert s Baker, Kath Taylor, Polly Kennelly, Dean Egan. Lectures, Julian Prior, Rex Grencross-Grant.

Landcare merger

Landcare is now under the umbrella of the Nat Res society as landcare executive have finished their studies As of yet we are not sure of the direction of this merge and the implications for the Nat Res society. There is a need to have someone volunteer for the job of over seeing this area. Natalie has a list of requirements for this roll if anyone is interested in finding out more. Irena, Bob, Leo and Dean have expressed interest but we are still waiting on definite decisions. Progression of the UNE landcare projected along the creek below the sports centre is proving difficult as finding contacts on staff is quite a challenge. There main jobs that need to be done is spraying and mulching which is not able to be done by the society as we dont have the relevant certifications and tools to undertake these jobs, it was suggested that we maybe able to  rent tools form SNELC, also getting in touch with someone involved with grounds upkeep that maybe able to assist in spraying and pruning etc.

Up coming land care events

Uralla river care have invited students to attend a meeting in Uralla on the Sunday the 16th of March transport is available. Rex will send out an email with more details.

Fundraising

It has been suggested that we make use of the Mars and Cadburys chocolate drives to raise money for the society Cadbury appears to have the better deal $24 per box $24 profit

$1.00 48 units, fredos cherry ripes

$2.00 24 in a box

With an approximate profit of $248 per 12 boxes

Pick up free 28 days to pay for chocolates

12 $248 aprox

order 20 box

10 $1.00 10 $2.00 chocolates

buying from Cadbury

Schools project

Kath is Still waiting to get hold of Craig to organise a time, plants they want etc need to organise day. When we have organised a day then we will order the plants and pick them up a day or two before planting. Organise someone to  talk about who we are what we do and why we do it.

Trivia night

3-4 weeks into 2nd semester.

Need to decide on a project or some other worth while organisation to give money to and also to fundraise for the society. Sponsors needed to be organised early, Natalie has a list of last years sponsors.

Kath has a list of jobs required for the trivia night. Some of these jobs include finding sponsors, collecting prizes, tickets, marketing, organising food and drinks, tables, questions.

Calvin, Kath and Jeff offered to help.

Careers session

Tentative date of 18th or the 27th of March. 5:00 start BBQ and 6:00 start the session. BBQ will be a time to recruit new members. Plan to have representatives from EA systems, Kath is looking into, DEC Calvin is looking into and landcare. Calvin has volunteered to do a presentation of some of his work experience.

Airles availability needs to be checked as does the other organisations. Calvin will get quotes and Kath will go shopping.

Scholarships/work experience

Calvin has kindly offered to set up a student chapter to help students net work within the mining industry. This is through the Australian industry for minerals (I think). There are meetings at the pub with industry representatives possible opportunities to access scholarships and industry placements, this is available to the BURPs, geologist, environmental science and nat resers. Membership is $11.00, Calvin will keep us posted on this.

Mergers/membership

There is a possibility of encouraging students from the engineering, BURPs, environmental science, Geology, earth science to join in with the natural resource society. This may require a name change and constitution change. Suggested competition to work out the new name, prize of some description. thinking of having one society with various subsets.

Membership fee of $15.00, $2.00 of which goes to SNELC for insurance for landcare projects

Networking opportunities

On the 12th March there will be a meeting of engineering industry reps, Rex has requested that this event be hosted by the Nat Res society. We would be given a Budget of $450. Drinks and food need to be organised, a BBQ held at Eco man, gifts for presenters. Irena, Jeff and Kath have offered to help organise.

Ball

We will be looking for a different location to last year to host the event, music was also a concern so some suggestions were a mp3 player which will be owned by the society  or a laptop which will be also used to take minutes, there is one possible  available from environmental engineering department currently in possession of Bec, maybe need to update memory and capacity.

Paraphernalia

Shirts caps foot ball jersey and vests are all possibilities but we will wait until all the mergers have taken place before any decisions are made.

New England award

We are trying to get the Nat res society registered with the
New England award before we do this we need to formalise roles and responsibilities and sort out the merger.

Meetings

Next BBQ is at careers information night other meetings once a month, last  Thursday evening of each month.
