Stop the Great Firewall of Australia

It has come to my attention that the Federal Parliament is trying to implement censorship of the internet for all Australians.

I think that the effort is futile and is a big waste of taxpayer money.

I have emailed Senator Stephen Conroy as Minister for Broadband, Communications, and Digital Economy and Tony Windsor as Member for New England stating the way that I feel.

The details of Senators and Members of Parliament can be found here:

Linux User Group at the Markets

We ran a stall at the Sunday Markets.

We started late due to having to seek out Matthew Gilbert from the PCYC in order to find out where our stall was to be, and the Markets were unusually quiet being held on a day outside the normal routine (Last Sunday of the month).

We had printed some brochures for the occasion, telling about Linux, the Linux User Group, and Free Software in general. We had a quick overview of Ubuntu, some stuff about OpenOffice.org, and the ‘What is Free Software’ article by the FSF. Also, between us, our laptop batteries lasted longer than we needed them to.

There was quite a lot of interest, by both curious individuals and those in-the-know so to speak, and we even managed to give away 1 Ubuntu CD (Gutsy). ie, I got no homework done…

I hereby declare this day a success, and hope the stalls at the market will continue into the future.

Thanks to Eve for the table, Tommy for the food, and my aunt for the fold-out chairs. We had a lot of fun.

David.

(Ubuntu) Linux howtos available at the ITD

I have prepared and given a few howtos to the UNE ITD in order to help those that use Linux, well at least Ubuntu anyway. They are available (upon request) from the ITD.

They are:
How to find the Hardware Address of a network card
How to connect to metz
How to set Firefox to use the UNE proxy
How to set Thunderbird to use your UNE email account
How to set Ubuntu to use the UNE Wireless Network

I will upload them to the lugune website - done (They are under Multimedia)

Software freedom day

Hello again,

Software Freedom Day is happening again this year. It should be a great excuse to get out and help promote free software, if you’re able to get somewhere that’s holding an event. Unfortuantely there is not going to be anything on in Armidale, but there will be in other towns including Brisbane, Coffs Harbour, the Gold Coast, and Newcastle.

If you’re interested, the URL to check out is softwarefreedomday.org.

Thanks to David Geary for reminding me (and also see his comment on the ‘Links’ page).

Welcome

Tux the Linux PenguinBSD Daemon ‘Beastie’Mac OS X

Welcome to the new blog for the UNE *nix User Group.

This group aims to bring together users of unix-like operating systems (such as Linux, *BSD, MacOSX, etc) from UNE and Armidale. At the moment, there’s just a mailing list but keep your eyes peeled! More details can be found on the about us page.

Hopefully we’ll be able to post news about the group here, as well as unix news, info about new software, etc.
