Put your feet up and - collaborate

collaboration-spaceweb.jpg

A new collaboration space will allow UNE students to work together 24/7 in a comfortable and safe environment.

The ground floor of the ITD building has been transformed with the addition of bright comfy chairs, coffee tables and vending machines. The student collaboration space aims to provide students with a comfortable environment where they can get together to share ideas or just enjoy a bit of time out.

The collaboration space is located near the IT service desk and is covered by UNE’s wireless network making it the perfect place for computer based collaboration. There are also plans to install a large computer screen which can be plugged into a laptop to allow students to work together on one computer.

The collaboration space has been made possible through funding from DEST. The space is well lit and covered by CCTV for students’ safety and security.

I went up to the ITD building to have a look at this earlier today. It looks like a good idea, but one thing that I noticed is that there didn’t seem to be any powerpoints. That’s sort of okay if you have a laptop with a decent battery but a lot of students have older machines with poor battery life. Power outlets would be quite nice, if possible.

    Hi Gavin,

It would be great to be able to install power points But…..the floor of the building is heated which means that it isn’t safe to install powerpoints near the chairs and tables. There are plans to install one powerpoint near the soon to be installed TV screen.

Tips for conserving your laptop’s battery

For all of us with older laptops with poor battery life - here’s a great article with ideas for making your battery power last (you may even be able to use the ITD collaboration space!!)

    The article is at http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/how-to-conserve-your-laptops-battery-power/
It suggests doing things like turning down screen brightness and creating a power conservation hardware profile that you can use when you need to stretch your battery.

    Hope it helps!!
