Welcome to the School of Humanities Blog

July 29th, 2008 by cgirvin

Greetings ‘Bloggers’ from Lynda Garland:

We hope you enjoy our SHUM Blog which we will endeavour to update regularly during 2009.This is a site where we can all have the chance to share ideas, plans and hopes for the future whether related to research, grant proposals or teaching innovations. In this way we can keep up with what others have done or are intending to do in their fields and perhaps network more closely with each other in developing new teaching, competitive grant and research strategies. It can also be used as a site to record our achievementsâ whether staff, HDRs or honoraries and adjuncts. Perhaps we should start with some of the exciting ideas in the school for online teaching and assessment volunteers please! Lynda.

‘Thank Gods’ series for 2009 (a caravan of love and religion)

Thank Gods’ is an ABC New England and Northwest weekly radio discussion segment with presenter Suzanne Hill and UNE School of Humanities ‘Thank Gods’ Academics led by Professor Lynda Garland and her dedicated team of philosophers and historians, some of whom having had experiences of visiting ‘witch doctors’ in Africa. ‘Thank Gods’ examines why we believe what we do, through exploring the concepts of God, Faith, Church, Worship and Religious beliefs from the Ancient Egyptians, through to the roles and the work of Missionaries and Witch Doctors in Africa.

The Philosopher’s Zone ABC Radio National:

Interview with Dr. Adrian Walsh on: The philosophy of cold hard cash. There’s not much money in philosophy, but then there’s not much philosophy in money, either. In classical times and the Middle Ages, philosophers were often interested in money (in thinking about it, that is) but since then they’ve tended to ignore the subject. This week, we meet an Australian philosopher who has turned his attention to the neglected subject of cash and its role in our practical and moral lives.View Transcript
