School iPad

The School has recently purchased an iPad2  and stylus for Academic staff to use.

Some Coordinators have been using the iPad in their lectures by using the AirSketch app, which turns the iPad  into a wireless whiteboard.
The information is then captured through Camtasia Relay and posted on the Units Moodle site for external students.

If you are interested in using the iPad in your lectures or have seen other members of staff use an iPad with an app that you would like to try, come see Naomi Blackburn in W39 Room 103.

For more information on the wireless whiteboard click on the link below

Academic Calendar

Kerry has put together a calendar of important dates for academic staff, which outlines due dates for exams (papers and results), unit amendments, unit material, booklists, Intensive School dates and more!

This calendar is available here.

There is also a listing for ISBT key dates available here.

We hope these will be useful to you through 2012.

Printing Assignments

The default in Moodle is OFF for printing for assignments. While some units have had this changed to ensure that assignments are centrally printed, this may not be the case for all units.

If you require central printing for assignments, please check your Moodle site to ensure this setting is correct.

To do this, go to the unit, click on the link for the assignment. On the right hand side of the page, you should see a block which says ‘Printing is ON (or OFF). There will be a link beside this ‘Turn ON (or OFF)‘. Click the link to change the setting. If you have multiple assignments, click on the ‘Print settings and reports‘ link instead and you will access a page where you can change the print settings for all assignments at once.

Moodle Profiles

Your Moodle profile is visible to all students – so it is important that it is up to date and (preferably) includes a photo.

To add or edit profile information, log in to Moodle and go to the settings block (usually right hand side), click on the > symbol next to My Profile Settings to open the menu and then click on Edit Profile. In the Profile settings, you can add contact details, a photo (which will appear in Forums when you post a message) and information about yourself (remember that this is not unit specific, so if you are teaching in a number of units, this information needs to be about you, not about a particular unit).

You can also set forum tracking (most popular option is: ‘Yes – highlight new posts for me’) and email settings for forum posts in your Profile.

If you have any problems, please let us know. Also, we have photos if you are unable to find one to upload.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all, and welcome back!

We look forward to working with you on unit development again in 2012.

If you have any queries, most of the Educational Development team is located in W39. As you know, Kerry is part of our team at the moment, and she is located in W40.

The New Educational Development Team

The new structure for Educational Development in the School has been finalised this week.

As many of you know, Terry, Naomi and Alison (David)  have moved from W42 to W39, signifying a move from GSB to BEPP. The plan was that Terry, Naomi, Alison and I (Sue) would comprise a new team of 4 Educational Developer and Communications Officers, responsible for Educational Development and Communications tasks across the School.

Sadly, Alison (David) has decided to move on from UNE. We wish her well in following her dreams and hope that she will keep in touch with us.

Happily, Kerry Towns has agreed to take on a position within the Educational Development and Communications team for the period up to 3 February. I welcome Kerry to the team, and believe she will be a valuable addition.

Handover from Alison to other team members will be clearly communicated and further communications re unit material should be through your revised contact, as handed over from Alison or myself. If there are any concerns, please contact me (but note that I am on leave for the week prior to the Christmas break).

Ascilite Proceedings

The Proceedings from Ascilite 2011: Changing Demands, Changing Directions are available on the web: http://www.leishman-associates.com.au/ascilite2011/proceedings.php

There are a number of interesting articles related to emerging technologies, screencasting, learning styles, collaboration, evaluation and feedback, ePortfolios, engagement, assessment…to name a few.

Learning Studio Progress

This week has seen Pearson send back responses and queries regarding the University’s review of the initial Proof of Concept (POC).

UNE staff have provided further information on a few aspects of the POC and hope to have a finalised and approved POC developed before Christmas. Unit conversion on the four GSB units being developed for Trimester 1 will then commence.

Development for Trimester 1

Administrative/ Educational Development staff in the School have been working towards a deadline of pre Christmas for unit development for Trimester 1, 2012 to be completed.

There are still a few units with material outstanding and it would be great if we could have any outstanding material next week. We have around 15 units still to be ‘uploaded and completed’.

There are around 65 units being offered in Trimester 1, across the School. Of these, 4 units will be offered in Learning Studio. All units will be released to students on 06 February.

During January we will need to finalise units online in terms of updating eReserve links and (in some cases) assessment tasks and quizzes. Also, there are still a number of units which need to be reviewed prior to release.

Smartboards in BEPP

At the last School meeting, Martina Linneman from ITD indicated that she would look into the possibility of installing Smartboards in some of our teaching spaces.  Whilst they may not be viable for big lecture theatres (see below), there is scope to install them in smaller rooms.

ITD is looking to the School for suggestions as to where these could be installed.  If you have any suggestions, please forward them to Honey Greenwood.
