On Wednesday 28 October UNE Council held a Special meeting at which Professor James Barber was appointed to the position of Vice Chancellor of UNE. Professor Barber will take up the position in February 2009.

Professor Barber’s appointment comes as a result of the retirement of Professor Alan Pettigrew on 31 October. Deputy Vice Chancellor Graham Webb will be Acting Vice Chancellor at UNE until Professor Barber takes up the position.

Hello everyone
The UNE Council meeting in September was held in Sydney, which allowed Sir Laurence Street to attend and update Council on his investigations into the governance issues that arose during early 2009 at UNE.
Sir Laurence advised that he was confident the processes instigated by Council, and the review currently being conducted, would result in improvements to university governance thoughout Australia.

Hello everyone
The past several months have been EXTREMELY busy. I’ve been working to establish a Student Representative Committee at UNE. On 1 May UNE Council passed the constitution, and on 16 June Undergrads of New England Guild Inc was incorporated by the NSW Dept of Fair Trading.
This has been very demanding time wise, but will be very rewarding once the elections are concluded, and a Student Executive elected.
There has been fantastic support from the University during the development of UNEG Inc. They have provided office space (an entire building actually!) and have agreed to the construction of new offices. Services UNE have also given a great deal of support, with the provision of office equipment, including computers, printers, office furniture, covering costs for phones and internet, and more.
Electronic ballots will be sent to une email addresses on Monday, with voting closing on Monday 24th August - don’t leave it until the last minute!
If you are interested in student representation, please take your time to examine the candidates information and to cast your vote.
The next UNE Council meeting will be in Sydney on Monday 14th September. We will meet Sir Laurence Street and hear his report on governance. You might also be interested to have a look at the new Governance link on the UNE home page, with links to updates from the Chancellor, details of Council members and access to minutes of Council meetings and other official information.

I have nominated for the position of undergraduate member of the UNE Council. The election will be held from 15 August. Voting closes on 12 September at 5pm.
Ballots are being emailed to your UNE email address, so please don’t forget to log in and vote.
A Forum has been arranged for nominees, at which they will be able to give an outline of their experience and answer any questions. I have started this Blog for students like me who may be studying externally (about 3/4 of undergraduate students), or simply unable to be on campus for the Forum. The 100 words allowed for nominees (which will be sent with ballots) seems inadequate to provide information on which to base your vote.
