NAIDOC WEEK IS COMING

Posted in community, Uncategorized on April 26, 2012 by rwaters8

Yaama All,

NAIDOC week is fast approaching and this year is shaping up to be a great one here in Armidale. There will be many events such as morning teas and flag raisings throughout the week with it all culminating in the marquee event of Ms and Mr NAIDOC on the evening of Friday the 6th of July.

Tickets are now available from Armidale Council.

There will also be a raffle held to help raise money for the event and also help fund local community members with children who play representative sport, the money raised will help with travel and accommodation for parents to go away and watch their children represent in various sporting activities.

Pacific Bay Resort Novotel Coffs Harbour has already come on board donating 1 nights accommodation in a resort room with a full buffet breakfast for two adults as a major prize.

Personally I can’t wait for NAIDOC week, I hope to see you all there

CHALLENGE

2012

Yaama Bloggers,

New England Medicare Local (formerly the New England division of General Practice) is one of the lead organisations here in Armidale in a campaign to get the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community active, fit and healthy.

The challenge has been put out by Health NSW and NSW Aboriginal Rugby League KO to Aboriginal communities around NSW to see just who can lose the most weight; so it is kind of like The Biggest Loser – Black Fullas Style…. The challenge runs from May 14th until August 31st with heaps of activities to keep the body and mind active.

I am also on the committee as an organisation representative so if you want to be involved here in Armidale all you have to do is get in touch with myself or alternatively get in touch with Amanda Tighe, Community Support Worker, New England Medicare Local, 213 Rusden St, Armidale NSW 2350 or call on Ph: (02) 67711146

If you are like me and are on Facebook (too much) you can also check out

For the record I am 87.7kgs…. (I cant believe I just put that out there) and i am hoping to get down to 75Kg (wish me luck)

Hope to see you all out there soon getting fit and active….

UNE4ME was a huge success….

Posted in Uncategorized, UNE4ME on April 5, 2012 by rwaters8

On behalf of myself and the University of New England I would like to say thank you to all of the schools’, parents, workers and students whom were involved in the UNE4ME day on Wednesday the 4th of April 2012.

Luke Carroll was a major hit with the students and to be honest I dont think he has signed so many autographs in such a short space of time before. When I asked him if he was OK with the kids swarming all around him, he casually replied “I cant say no brother, thats why I am here”… what a guy; Thanks again Luke the kids really apreciated it as did I.

The behavior of the students throughout the event was impeccable, and I could not have asked for a better group of young Aboriginal people to represent their schools and their communities.

I trust that they all got something out of the day and I hope that we may have planted the seed that will one day lead to them going on to university as either a student or an employee.

The one message that I wanted to pass on to the students is;

If you want to come to UNE or go to a University when you leave school, you can.

It may seem like a long way away but I promise you that it is an option.

Just remember what we said at UNE4ME;

If you work hard at school, and you work together to help your fellow students, you will have unlimited choice

…… ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE”.

A massive thanks again from the UNE4ME Crew, and I hope to see you all up here again soon

Any further updates will go on the “Black Pages” Blog when available  – http://blog.une.edu.au/aboriginalemployment/

Warm Regards,

Rob Waters

I wish to pay my respects to the Custodians of the lands we are on and pay my respects to our elders both past and present. I also acknowledge our children, for just as our elders have lit the way for us in the past, our children will hold the light when we are gone.

UNE4ME is tomorrow

Posted in community, UNE4ME on April 3, 2012 by rwaters8

Yaama All,

Tomorrow is the UNE4ME day here at UNE and we are just about set for it.

As we speak I am tying up a few loose ends BUT I am sure to have forgotten something (as you do). Yet in saying that tomorrow will be the first in a series of some great initiatives that are aimed at engaging and retaining our peoples in the field of higher education.

I am looking forward to catching up with Luke Carroll to have a yarn with him about his acting career and the role that education has played in his achievements. I also want to have a yarn about his beloved South Sydney Rabbitohs beating my team the West’s Tigers by 1 point in extra time on Sunday …. Not happy Jan….

In any case tomorrow is shaping up to be a great day, I will update you all as soon as I can but till then…

Take care of yourself, each other and your community
