Deadly Australian actor Luke Carroll will be there to give a talk to the students

Next Wednesday the 4th of April will see the first part of the UNE4ME initiative rolled out with the UNE4ME day.

The day is aimed at Yr 4-6 Aboriginal students and their parents and carers from Armidale and surrounding areas. This event will be the first in a series of initiatives aimed at increasing engagement between the University and the Aboriginal community.

The students will hear from current Aboriginal staff members at different levels of the organisation and also from students about personal experiences of being here at UNE. The students will then have the chance to get up close and personal with well known actor Luke Carroll (pictured above) as he talks about his own journey with his acting career and the foundation that education has laid for him.

As you may be aware the links on this page to the archives don’t seem to be working, I am new to this whole blogging thing so as Bryan Adams said all those years ago…..  ”Please forgive me; I know not what I do”

Aboriginal Art Exhibition and Auction Dinner

 Featuring a Night with Jeff McMullen (Guest Speaker & former ABC and 60 Minutes reporter and foreign correspondent)

The Mental Health Promotion and Prevention team in collaboration with the Aboriginal Mental Health Coordinators from Hunter New England Local Health District are holding an “Art Auction and Exhibition” over 3 days Thursday 15^th to Saturday 17^thMarch 2012 inclusive as part of the National Closing the Gap Initiative.

The broad aims are to showcase major Aboriginal artists, participants involved and to help inform the broader community about Aboriginal culture, mental health and entrepreneurial skills to encourage creative business and employment opportunities based on the strengths of Aboriginal people.

 Where?

• The Exhibition and Auction will be held at the Armidale City Bowls Club, Dumaresq St Armidale, from 15^th to 17^thMarch, 2012 with
• Auction and Dinner being held on the evening of 17^thMarch at the Club as part of the Armidale Autumn Festival.

 Organisers Mr Joe Miller and Dr Alan Avery stated that this Exhibition and Auction will be an important and exciting community development program. Through its implementation we hope to achieve an annual event that will raise expectations and mental well-being within and outside the Aboriginal community including fostering practical reconciliation amongst all concerned.

 Money raised on the night will be used for developing mental health promotion and prevention of social and emotional problems, focusing on strengths, resilience and raising self-esteem, and developing strategic and culturally relevant business initiatives and opportunities for Aboriginal people.

The cost is $40 per ticket which includes a 2 course dinner, nationally renowned guest speaker Jeff McMullen (former Sixty Minutes reporter, author, journalist, Honorary CEO of Ian Thorpe‘s Foundation for Youth and a Trustee of the Jimmy Little Foundation). Jeff was awarded an Order of Australia for service to journalism and awareness of social and human rights issues as well as service to charity. 

This is a great opportunity for people to appreciate and obtain artwork from major Aboriginal artists renowned in this country and internationally.

Come to the Exhibition and listen to the Stories of the first people of this country. View their artwork, learn from an ancient culture and experience one of the great exhibitions of Art in your lifetime

Tickets for Dinner are available at Armidale Bowling Club,Visitors Information Centre and Armidale Dumaresq Council.
