Emeritus Professor Robin Stokes

Robert Harold (Robin) Stokes was Foundation Professor of Chemistry at the University of New England from 1955-79.

To celebrate his eminent career and 90th birthday, the School of Science and Technology will hold a series of events from 4:30 pm on 22 April 2009. (Please note change of date.)

The program for the afternoon and evening will include drinks in the foyer of the newly renovated Lewis Lecture Theatre, followed by an overview of Professor Stokes’ life and work by Professor Ken Marsh.

This will be followed by dinner at, Booloominbah from 6 pm.  (Please note, there will not be an academic procession.)

Stokes Building UNE

Professor Stokes’ research interests include solution thermodynamics and electrolytes.
His career highlights include:

  • Chemist and Chief Chemist, Colonial Ammunition Company, Auckland and Hamilton, New Zealand 1941-45
  • Lecturer in Chemistry, University of Western Australia 1946-47
  • ICI Fellow, University of Cambridge 1948-49
  • Senior Lecturer and Reader in Chemistry, University of Western Australia 1950-55
  • Foundation Professor of Chemistry, University of New England 1955-79
  • Emeritus Professor UNE from 1980

During his distinguished career, he was awarded the Rennie Medal, Australian Chemical Institute 1946; Meldola Medal, Institute of Chemistry 1946; H.G. Smith Medal, Australian Chemical Institute 1953; Fellow, Australian Academy of Science 1957; Queen’s Jubilee Medal 1977; R.H. Stokes Medal, Electrochemistry Division, Royal Australian Chemical Institute (inaugural award) 1980; R.A. Robinson Memorial Medal, Faraday Division, Royal Society of Chemistry (inaugural award) 1981.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Royal Australian Chemical Institute.
